It was the favourite meeting place of the Roman people built by and for Julius Caesar. This basilica housed public meeting places and shops, but it was mainly used as a law court.
Caesar also placed a statue of his favourite horse in front of the temple. Following his assassination, a statue of Caesar riding this horse was added.
Space for the theatre was bought by Julius Caesar, who was murdered before it could be begun.
The construction was built by Gaius Julius Caesar (thus the name Curia Julia) to replace the Curia Hostilia.
Besides the ruins of Julius Cæsar's temple, the adored remains of the altar are to be seen. Until today there are flowers laid down from admirers regularly.
