Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park

Orientation & Geography

North America, United States, Humboldt County

Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park is located 20 Miles east of Eureka, California then another 18 miles (29 km) east of Fortuna, California on State Route 36. This low use park containing 30 campsites is sited on the Van Duzen River. The small park was created by a donation from Owen R. Cheatham, founder of Georgia-Pacific Corporation, who wanted to preserve the stand of Redwoods, now comprising the heart of this park, in perpetuity. The park is so secluded due to its location off the major regional artery, US 101, that on a weekday a visitor can be the only person in any one of the several groves. Proposed for closure in 2008 This is one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program since rescinded following public outcry.
