The Solvay Brussels School of Economics and Management (SBS-EM) is a management school accredited by the European Quality Improvement System (since 2005) and Association of MBAs, and is part of the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, in Belgium. It was founded in 1903 by Ernest Solvay as the Ecole de Commerce Solvay. In 2003, it was re-named the Solvay Business School. More than 2,000 students attend some thirty programmes at the School today, including Bachelor 's Degrees in business engineering and economics and Masters (MSc – Master of Science) in both disciplines, the Solvay MBA and more than thirty Executive Education programmes. Its current president is Mathias Dewatripont. Since 1990, the Solvay Business School has developed a network of more than 70 partners in 32 countries, with whom some 160 student exchanges are organised each year. The Solvay Business School is the only school in Belgium to oblige its students to undertake a six-month exchange programme in a university abroad. Such exchanges take place principally in Europe, within the framework of the SOCRATES and ERASMUS programmes, but also in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, Egypt, Israel, South Africa, India (IIM Ahmedabad), Korea, Japan, Thailand, China, Taiwan and Singapore. The Union of Solvay Business School Alumni is an association that represents all those men and women who have graduated from the Solvay Business School or one of its satellite institutions. Within the particular context of Belgium, a country marked in the past by religious and ideological rifts, alumni associations play an extremely important role, especially for the universities.
