Grímsey is a small island 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Iceland, situated directly on the Arctic Circle. Until a vote in 2009 to amalgamate with Akureyri, it constituted the hreppur (municipality) of Grímseyjarhreppur, part of the county of Eyjafjarðarsýsla. The population is approximately 100; the only settlement is Sandvík.
